THE Otago Central Rail Trail has fast become a highlight for adventurers on the south island of New Zealand. Traipsing for 15o kilometres it goes through varied scenery from rocky tor country and dramatic gorges to open plains and farmland.
The trail can be completed in roughly 3-4 days of easy but continual cycling but the scenery, the historic towns and friendly locals be that the publican, some sheep, deer or other bikers makes this a trip you won t forget cheap motel rooms in a hurry.
Bikes can be rented at either end of the trip and transport will ferry you from these points. A real highlight at the start or end of the trip is the dramatic ride on the historic Taieri Gorge Railway.
Four days. One bike. 160km. That was my task on the Otago Central Rail Trail this week; a popular cycling journey through the dry, farmland of southern New Zealand following an old railway.
