Victoria and New South Wales are the only states in Australia that will not offer public transport concessions to international students. It is a ridiculous decision and one of poor judgement by the respective state governments. Considering that the revenue south lake tahoe lodging rentals generated directly and indirectly as a result of the international education industry. Australia is an attractive destination for students. However, due to poor economic decision-making of both New South Wales and Victoria it is risking turning students away from selecting Australia as a place to study.
Both governments assert that it is impossible, given the constraints of their respective budgets, to extend concessions to international students. However recent studies conducted by the Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET) in a position paper released in February 2012 Achieving Equitable Travel Benefits for international students: south lake tahoe lodging rentals a position paper indicated that the budget decision taken by these state governments is short sighted. The income from each student is estimated to be approximately $28 500 each year. The cost of extending public transport concessions to foreign students is less than this. For instance, the revenue received by from the international education industry in Victoria alone is $4.8 billion. The cost of introducing concessions for foreign students is estimated to cost the state $93 million. It does not take a genius to come to the conclusion that it makes economic sense.
From the perspective of the international student not having access to public transport concessions not only makes life more of a struggle financially and socially. This can only impact future students considering Victoria or NSW as a study destination unfavorably. It may also have wider adverse implications on Australia as a destination.
In a survey conducted by ACPET it was found that Sixty-seven percent of international students when asked; if they knew before coming to Australia south lake tahoe lodging rentals that they were not entitled to concessions, they would not have chosen Victoria or New South Wales as a place to study. Worst for these states is that when asked whether they would recommend these states to their friends or colleges considering coming to Victoria or Sydney to study Eighty-nine percent said no . It is obvious to me what the state governments should do. And this is the position that ACPET has recommended in their position paper – provide concession travel . I have attached south lake tahoe lodging rentals this paper to this article (click on the image below to view).
It is a difficult for the student at the best of times. south lake tahoe lodging rentals However the lack of public transport concessions only makes it worse. The cost of catching a train, tram or bus has been estimated to represent more than thirty percent of the student s disposable income after paying rent. Where the student has found work, remembering that they are limited to twenty hours per week under a student visa, this may represent a higher south lake tahoe lodging rentals percentage. The cost not included in this is where the student in order to work may have to pay for a taxi in order to get to work. This is an unsustainable cost. When presented with work so desperately needed, paying almost a third of the day s income to get there is worth it.
As a student south lake tahoe lodging rentals s work and study are about the only two options available. There is hardly any time for recreation. However, on that rare occasion where students can get out and about, it is limited to the cost. With no car, students are limited again on a reliance south lake tahoe lodging rentals on public transport. I recently traveled to Albury by train. It cost me sixty dollars return. On a weekly budget that has been estimated to be in order of $346, sixty dollars is substantial. As a concession the same ticket would cost $30. This would make the consideration of exploring Albury a real possibility. For Albury or anywhere, more visitors translate to more tourist dollars. This would be positive for rural parts of Australia, more visitors more dollars for the student more opportunities, Australia opens up, no longer limited to the cities and outlying suburbs. Furthermore, the study also found that because of the cost of transport is consuming a large portion of the disposable income, the standard of housing is affected. Seventy-four south lake tahoe lodging rentals percent of respondents felt that they were forced to choose substandard accommodation because of the cost of public transport. There was less money after everything was factored in for rent. I have written about my experience when visiting students for a meal. The accommodation is substandard; there is no choice for the student.
It is obvious what needs to be done, extend the public transport concession to international students. Victorian and New South Wales governments need to reconsider their position, otherwise they may see both a mass exodus and a reduction of students entering south lake tahoe lodging rentals their states.

I did not know that my nephew would be paying $60 per week to travel to Wollongong to study. When you consider that it costs, not just $60,000 to $100,000 for fees alone in NSW, then accommodation, then books and clothes before even thinking of food, it is not surprising south lake tahoe lodging rentals that many potential international students are going to more economically viable countries like America and even England. I will make sure that I tell as many people south lake tahoe lodging rentals as possible in Europe about this farcical situation. It is just NSW and Victoria being greedy grubs as usual.
