yestravel, I was offered that too with Hertz. As I recall the daily fee was something like $3.50 a d

I'm a little confused about how the tolls work in Florida with a rental car. I do know that my recent Hertz and my upcoming Dollar rentals both say if you encounter a "no cash or credit card accepted" toll booth, that their system kicks in with the license plate recognition -- at a fee of the toll plus a $15 per occurrence charge (with a cap of something like $90.
Fortunately on my recent trip to Miami and Ft. Lauderdale from Naples, last minute cruise bargains I was able to pay cash for all tolls, but just checking in the event I run into one of those unmanned booths last minute cruise bargains that don't allow you to do that. A charge of $15 for a 25 cent toll for example seems excessive to me!
I believe that the rental company is just covering itself for those who just "run" the sensor lane without a sensor... the "Toll by Plate" option reads the license plate and bills the rental company...
I got hit with these "convenience" fees in both Naples, last minute cruise bargains FL and Boston earlier this year using AVIS. I tried to stop and pay the tolls in cash but the first booth lady told me since I had the transponder on the car, the system had already last minute cruise bargains charged it for the toll.I wound up paying over $50 for about $5 worth of tolls.
You can use your E-ZPass last minute cruise bargains transponder on all toll roads with specially last minute cruise bargains marked "E-ZPass" last minute cruise bargains lanes. This currently includes roads in Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and West Virginia.
as garyt22 says, EZ pass won't work. Florida has a number of exits on toll roads, particularly in the Miami area where the only way to pay is with a Sun Pass - their version of EZ Pass. These exits are well marked. Go through that exit without paying and a bill with processing fee will be sent to the rental company who will most likely tack on an extra fee when they pass it to you.
3. Get a Sun Pass. There are 2 types, one that is permanently stuck to your window - those are the least expensive. The other is like the EZ Pass that you put in a holder with suction cups. The Sun Pass is available at rest stops on toll roads and directly by mail that you can get before you leave on your trip. Both types have to be "charged" with your credit card to work. You can do that by phone during last minute cruise bargains normal office hours. Hertz will not like the permanent kind, but if you get one, be sure to call and get it inactivated when you return the card.
But garyt22, you're missing a major point. I understand there are some exits (or entrances) that have no manned or coined machines. You MUST use a pass or let them bill you for the license plate thing. It's easy to say, don't use those exits, but how does one know where they are until you are in them and it's too late to back out into heavy traffic?
dwooddon, I assume you are talking about Alligator Alley in Naples. You simply got in the wrong lane I guess, but it is possible last minute cruise bargains to pay with cash there. But I'm really confused about their saying it was too late if you were in a cash or pass lane. Surely you can still pay when you drive up to the toll booth unless you were in a "pass only" lane, but then there would be no one to tell you they couldn't take cash.
Most major rental car companies now offer their customers the option of including tolls with the credit last minute cruise bargains card used to rent the vehicle. These rental car customers can use Florida's toll roads and not worry about carrying cash or stopping to pay for tolls. Using license plate recognition systems allows rental car customers to use the Express, SunPass ONLY, E-PASS ONLY and LeeWay ONLY lanes to bypass congestion and traffic.
Rental agencies or their associated third party vendors will assess the fees agreed to in your rental agreement to collect the toll(s). For more information on specific rental car programs, please contact your local rental car agency as each agency has separate programs and fees associated with electronic toll usage. Click here to view Pass24 , PlatePass last minute cruise bargains ,eToll , program summaries and participating rental agencies.
Maybe I was making last minute cruise bargains a problem where there is none. The only "big deal" about all of this is "how often might I end up at a toll booth that doesn't take cash or credit card and I have no option but to activate the plate pass? You don't need to do anything to activate it when you rent a car with this system (apparently now ALL rental cars in Florida have it). It will only kick in IF you go through a toll booth that doesn't have any cash or pay lines -- or if you go through last minute cruise bargains a pass only lane. But just do it once and you will be hit with a pretty hefty fee for doing so.
In November we rented a car at the FLL Airport. last minute cruise bargains We were offered the option of paying a daily fee that would opt us in the toll program. We could use the toll roads and not worry about accidentally getting in an express lane or carrying cash or stopping to pay for tolls. The tolls were charged to our credit card. If we chose not to enroll at time of the rental, and we incurred toll charges a $15.00 administrative fee + toll would be assessed for each infraction. I don't recall last minute cruise bargains which car rental company we used, but I imagine all the rental last minute cruise bargains companies are pretty similar.
yestravel, I was offered that too with Hertz. As I recall the daily fee was something like $3.50 a day (regardless of whether you used any toll roads or not). Since I was renting for 13 days, I decided I'd take my chances on NOT needing it at all. And it seemed to me that if I accidentally encountered one such toll situation, the $15 for the one time was better than $7 for the length of the rental ($45.50). Since I didn't encounter any such toll roads, I saved the money. Is my math wrong? To me, paying that much just for "peace of mind" really doesn't make much sense, but to others, perhaps it does.
I didn't get it either using the same logic as you. We were rather neurotic at first when driving on the freeways being extra cautious in order to avoid the express lanes. Whoever said its another way for the rental agencies to get extra bucks is right.
Florida has a good number of toll roads with off ramps that are marked SunPass only. On those there is no option other than the pass or getting a bill for the toll PLUS a fine. So, if you are in a rental without a pass, you can either 1. take the exit and pay the fine + the rental company administrative charges; 2. Pass the exit and find your way back to your destination; 3. Take the rental last minute cruise bargains company's deal when you pick up the car; 4. Buy a SunPass. You can do the latter through the SunPass website or mail you will get it in about a week. The least expensive one sticks to the windshield and can't be transferred. It is $5 plus a $10 minimum prepay that can be refilled with a credit card if needed. On returning the rental you must remove the pass - it will be destroyed when you do that. It will not work unless stuck to the windshield - you can't just leave it on the dash or hold it up the windshield .
Patrick - my first post was mis-stated. I should have just said Florida. The booth where the lady told me I couldn't pay cash if I had a tansponder was at the bridge between Fort Myers and Sanibel. Sorry for the confusion. I did pay on Alligator Alley also but since I had already been told the transponder was going to be dinged, I just went through the express lane. Both of these were before last minute cruise bargains I knew about the "convienance fee" AVIS was going to add to each toll.

When we got back onboard, we finally spent some time exploring the ship. Ironically, it was the last

We were booked historic wooden hotels on Blue Hawaiian Helicopters Kauai Eco Tour for 10 am this morning. We were required to check in by 9:15 am so we got off the ship at 8:50 am to make sure we had enough time to walk to Harbor Mall. We lucked out and the Harbor Mall shuttle just pulled into the pier so we hopped on. We got to Harbor Mall before 9 am and check-in with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters.
When we checked in, we were weighed and since it was still early, they asked us to come back at 9:45. We walked around the shopping center but there wasn t many stores opened. Chris got sucked into the model train store and I browsed jewelry. We returned to the Blue Hawaiian Helicopters office and it was now filled with people, including people who booked directly through NCL. We watched the safety video and then they called our names, forming us in groups of 6 for each helicopter. We were each given a number, which would be our seating arrangement historic wooden hotels in the helicopter. We were driven to the helipad in a van and waited in a seating area under a tent until they called our group. When our group was called, they asked us to line up by our number and then we were taken to the helicopter.
I was #1 and Chris was #2 so we were in the front row with me in the middle. In the back row, an older couple had the right-side and a younger couple on the left-side. The seating arrangement historic wooden hotels would be unfortunately become a pain point for this flight, as you ll find out later.
It was around 10:15 am when we lifted off. Before this year, I had never flown in a helicopter but we flew in one when we went to Alaska in July so this was my second heli ride ever and this year! LOL! Since this wasn t our first time, I think that took away some of the newbie excitement we had when we rode in a helicopter for the first time. That being said, it was still very exhilirating! There s no other feeling than taking off straight up into the air and feeling like you are flying historic wooden hotels because you are surrounded by windows!
The highlights of the flight were definitely historic wooden hotels Waimea Canyon, where you could see the river cutting through the ridges, the gorgeous jagged Napali Coast jutting into the ocean, and the countless EPIC sky-high waterfalls historic wooden hotels in Waialeale Crater! It was pretty rainy in Waialeale Crater but I guess that s pretty normal since it is the wettest spot on Earth! Also, the rain fills those gorgeous waterfalls!
The helicopter flight was wonderful and we re very happy we did it! However, there were a couple of dampers on our flight. First of all, Blue Hawaiian Helicopters web site specifically says that we were supposed historic wooden hotels to see Wailua Falls and the map on their site makes it look like we were supposed fly over part of the east side of the island. However, during our flight, we didn t see Wailua Falls and once we reached Hanalei, we pretty much flew directly south back over Kilohana Crater to Lihue, not flying over the east side of the island. We did see Wailua from very far away but we certainly didn t see Wailua Falls. I was disappointed by this because we didn t visit Wailua Falls by car since I thought we would see it from the helicopter ride so sadly, we left the island without getting to see the falls. (I even bought a postcard of Wailua Falls thinking I d see it during the helicopter tour.) In the grand scheme of things, not seeing Wailua Falls isn t that big of a deal but I m disappointed that I expected to see it because of the web site description. I actually e-mailed Blue Hawaiian Helicopters about this to find out why my flight may have skipped Wailua Falls and I received a direct reply from their CEO Dave Chevalier:
First I want to thank you for flying with us. We have traditionally shown Wailua falls on our tour but we have begun to receive complaints from overflights by ground visitors there. When a pilot notes a significant presence of ground visitors they have been instructed to give it a wide berth. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention. I will clarify that situation on our website. Although Wailua falls is impressive from the ground it does not compare to the waterfalls in Waimea Canyon, which can only be seen by air. We have compensated by including more waterfall views in the remote Waimea Canyon area. Not as well known but more spectacular than Wailua Falls, especially from the air. Notwithstanding this disappointment I hope you valued your experience.
I found his prompt response to be very professional and appreciate that he took my concerns seriously. I think this just further shows what an outstanding company Blue Hawaiian Helicopters is and I wouldn t hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
Second, I must warn you that your experience could vary greatly on what seat you have on the helicopter. The best seats are the front on the right side but you have no control over where you are seated because it is decided by weight. We were very lucky to get seated in the front row with the pilot. Unfortunately, someone has to sit in the bad seats, which are in the back row on the left. As I mentioned before, it was a young couple on our flight and the woman complained throughout the whole ride that she couldn t see anything. On one hand, she was exaggerating and a bit melodramatic. When we were flying over the canyons and in the crater where the waterfalls are, there are views on both sides. It was when we were flying along the coast that it was really only the right side that can see it. On the other hand, our pilot also could have made more effort historic wooden hotels to turn the helicopter around a few times to let both sides see, especially after she complained. He spent 5 full, long, boring minutes over the ocean looking for whales that never came and I would have much rather he spent those 5 minutes giving the left side of the helicopter a chance historic wooden hotels to see Napali Coast. I felt bad for her but at the same time, she was ruining our ride by complaining historic wooden hotels so much. It was a major buzzkill and I even felt guilty that we got the good seats. (When I watch the DVD of the flight, I cringe every time I hear her whine.) When the ride was over, we saw her complaining to the staff at the office but I don t know what came of it. Obviously, what seat
you get is a gamble and someone has to sit in the bad seats. Perhaps the Blue Hawaiian Helicopters should make it more clear to people historic wooden hotels that not all seats are created equal when they book the tour. But I would hope that if it were me that got the worst seat, I would just accept it and make the most of the ride anyway.
That looks like a lot of negative to me but seriously, we are so glad we did this helicopter ride and it was really amazing!! As I said before, I bought the DVD of our actual flight. I watched historic wooden hotels it to make sure this review is accurate about what we saw and when I watched it, I was just struck about how gorgeous the flight was all over again, especially Napali Coast and the waterfalls in Waialeale Crater. The DVD gave me chills!!
We returned to the Blue Hawaiian Helicopters office in Harbor Mall around 11:15 am. We had to wait about 15 minutes for them to make our DVD. Chris went back to the model train store to finish browsing. We walked around the rest of the mall to find a place to eat lunch and settled on Kalapaki Joe s. Chris got fried shrimp historic wooden hotels and I got shrimp tacos. The food was okay but nothing to write home about. I was pretty stressed out the entire meal because I was worried we wouldn t get back to the ship on time. We got our food around 12:30 pm and finished quickly so it wasn t a problem at all. I even had time to get a lychee-flavored shaved ice at Halo Halo Corner Shaved Ice in the mall on the ground floor in front of the shuttle stop before boarding the last shuttle back to the pier at 1 pm. I loved this shaved ice!! I definitely think ordering fruit flavors is the key for me to enjoy shaved ice!
People who read my blog often ask me if there is anything I d do different during a trip and this was one of the days I would have changed. I thought I d have plenty of time after the helicopter historic wooden hotels tour to walk around and eat lunch before getting back on the ship and that wasn t the case. We didn t even have a chance to explore the Anchor Cove Mall across the street. If I had to do it over again, I would have focused on walking historic wooden hotels around after our helicopter tour and waited until we got back on the ship to eat lunch since we had to be back on the ship by 1:30 pm anyway. Then we wouldn t have spent so much time eating lunch and not enjoying it because we were stressed about getting back to the ship.
When we got back onboard, we finally historic wooden hotels spent some time exploring the ship. Ironically, it was the last night of the cruise but this itinerary was so intensive that we just never had time to explore. Read my Pride of America review to see my thoughts on the ship. We also got to see one of the tugboats that would escort our ship out of Nawiliwili Harbor do donuts in the water!! The gift shops on the ship had a Blowout Sale and I spent some time shopping. There were some great Hawaii shirts for low prices. (I think $10 per shirt.)
Chris did some packing before the Napali Sailby. I ve read people recommend on the CruiseCritic s Hawaii Boards to get a spot for the sailby 45 minutes before the Daily Schedule says it will start, historic wooden hotels which was 5:15 pm for our cruise. Since Chris was in the middle of packing, we didn t get out on deck until 5:00 pm and good thing to because we saw the coast immediately. The ship sails by the Napali historic wooden hotels Coast on the port side first and then turns around for the starboard side. Some people report that the starboard side sailby is shorter and farther away and since we had a starboard side balcony, we decided to go out on deck to watch it during the first pass. Instead of going to the upper decks like many people do, we went to Deck 6 and watched it from there. historic wooden hotels It was not crowded there at all and we thought the view was great! The railing is also a bit taller than your waist so there isn t any protective barriers that block photos. We coul

Since Kaua i is made of mostly national and state parks, only 30% or so of it is accessible. This is why helicopter tours have become so popular there: you can t see it all by car. When my mom suggested we do this tour, I wasn t sure because of my aforementioned fear, as well as the $200 per person price tag. But there was no way we could not  do it.
We signed up with Jack Harter tours , who have been doing it for over thirty years. After arriving at their headquarters in Lihue, we were weighed and measured and placed accordingly in the helicopter.
Our pilot, galveston vacation rentals Chris, told us all about the island, pointing out sights like the Jurassic Falls (as seen in the movie Jurassic Park ) and the iconic Na Pali Coast. It s hard to know what to say about it, so instead, you should look at the pictures.

What a good idea. I was there last June but didn t do a helicopter tour. I m afraid of heights too, at least I ve developed a fear of heights over the past few years. I wonder galveston vacation rentals if that will make it difficult/unpleasant to go on a hot-air balloon ride or a helicopter tour . How did it go for you?
Congratulations on conquering galveston vacation rentals your fears. I have always wanted to take a helicopter over Hawaii. Why you ask, because I was a big fan of Magnum PI and TC was always taking Magnum on covert flights to help him with a case. It looked so beautiful.

Once at Molokini, the crew opens up the glass bottom viewing area and the water slide.  If it is you

Retail Price $94.95. cheap student travel OUR PRICE ONLY $79.95!!!! The Quicksilver is one of our favorite snorkel boats here at Auntie Snorkel. There are many good boats that go to Molokini, but the Quicksilver AM Molokini and Turtle Town trip really stands out from the crowd.
You're snorkeling adventure starts early and departs from Maalaea Harbor which is a short drive from both the Kihei/Wailea Resort area and the Kaanapali cheap student travel Resort area.  The Quicksilver cheap student travel is a state of the art deluxe 55' power catamaran.  As you board the boat you are greeted by your friendly crew and captain. A hearty continental  breakfast spread awaits you complete with Hawaiian pastries, local fruit, Kona coffee and assorted juices.
One of the reasons we love the Quicksilver so much is that it is one of the fastest rides to Molokini Crater .   Since the Quicksilver is so fast more time is spent snorkeling and less time is spent getting to and from the snorkeling sites.  The first snorkel site of the day, Molokini, is a a crescent shaped partially submerged volcanic crater.  It is considered the best snorkeling site in the Hawaiian islands. cheap student travel  It has been a marine preserve for over thirty years and is home to hundreds of species of fish and dozens of species of coral, many of them found only here in our Hawaiian waters.  The underwater visibility is consistently over 150 feet.
Once at Molokini, the crew opens up the glass bottom viewing area and the water slide.  If it is your first time snorkeling, or if it has just been a while, you'll be happy to know that the Quicksilver specializes in first time snorkelers. cheap student travel  The crew goes over the basics and will assist you with making cheap student travel sure your gear is comfortable and properly adjusted.  They have noodles and boogie boards available for added piece of mind.   Two lifeguards board Kayaks and keep an eye on the group for added safety.
After over an hour of snorkeling at Molokini Crater the crew blows the whistle and it is time to continue the adventure.  For the next leg of the trip the you will explore the remote Kanaio Coast for an opportunity to view the wild spinner dolphins.   The spinner dolphins ride the bow wakes of the boat and travel in large family groups often consising of over one hundred dolphins. cheap student travel  Unfortunately the dolphins can be elusive and we've been out on days when they were no where in sight.
Your second cheap student travel snorkeling site of the day is Turtle Town.  Unlike the elusive dolphins, you can count on swimming with lots of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles.  These guys are big, real big.   Adults average over 400 pounds, but don't worry they are vegetarians and only like to eat seaweed.  They have seen plenty of snorkelers and they don't seem to spooke easily so bring along an underwater camera for some amazing turtle photos.
You will have over an hour to snorkel with the turtles, abundant  tropical fish and coral at Turtle Town.  While there you will be served a mouthwatering BBQ lunch of cheese burgers, chicken breast burgers, and veggie burgers with all the fixings and salads, complete with a $1 cash bar for Mai Tais, and beer and wine.
Some activities are not recommended for pregnant women  or those with back problems.   Prices, features, tours are subject to change without notice. All Prices are per person subject to taxes, fuel surcharges, and harbor fees. Limited seats available on some trips. Molokini Crater trips and fire dancing are weather permitting. "We thought about how much we have that others don't have and so we decided that maybe we should give them something too," said Brooke Besikof, one of the young visionaries that founded exotic car rentals phoenix the charity Just a Little Cloth. "Because every girl deserves to have something (pretty)."
exotic car rentals phoenix "(When I wear a pretty exotic car rentals phoenix dress), it makes me feel like a princess," added Alyssa Antoci, the other half of the young dressy duo. "I want them to feel the same way we feel when we put on our fancy dresses."
Owning a beautiful, formal dress can change the way a young girls sees herself, it can give her confidence and self-esteem, and give her a positive outlook on life, according to the charity s mission statement.
The two girls, who have been friends since kindergarten, started out with the idea of designing and creating dresses for their own store, but when that proved to be too difficult, they reconsidered and came up with the idea of donating dresses to the less fortunate.
Their first donation event was for young girls from El Sol Science and Arts Academy in Santa Ana. The school staff picked 10 deserving girls, ages 6 to 12, to receive the dresses and attend a tea party hosted by Just a Little Cloth.
They give three choices to the girls, so they can pick a dress that is fitting to their own style. Not every girl wants to be a princess wearing a sparkly and poofy dress, noted Alyssa and Brooke, but every girl wants to feel beautiful.
"We like thinking about how the other girls feel when they try on the dresses," Brooke said. "Because when we try on a dress, exotic car rentals phoenix we feel like complete princesses, we feel like royalty. And when those girls that are less fortunate than us try on a beautiful dress we think that's really awesome that they're able to have that opportunity. These girls can always know that they are always going to be beautiful on the inside and the outside."

Lapahoehoe Point: A pretty little spot made more interesting when you know that a school here was co

For those of you who have been there, what more unusual places or activities did you find on the big island? We will have a car, so we can get around. We love exploring and getting off the beaten path a bit, so local restaurants, small museums, artist hangouts etc would all be good too.
I'm not keen on the helicopter rides myself. Having lived in Hawaii -- but on Oahu -- I remember there was a problem with annoyed discount london hotel Big Island locals taking potshots at the choppers discount london hotel from time to time, especially marijuana growers who thought it might actually be DEA surveillance. And there have been some crashes resulting from the corrosive effects of the volcano sulfur on the rotary blades. discount london hotel I recall reading about some movie footage of the volcano being filmed, and this happened to one of the helicopters, which crashed inside the crater but stopped just above the lava line. The pilot and camaeraman managed to scramble up and out. Hairy.
Anyway, Hilo is a pleasant discount london hotel little town. and I think the Parker Ranch -- one of the oldest ranches in the US, predating many if not most on the mainland -- is interesting; I believe that's up in the Kohala area.
I wouldn't worry about car-rental restrictions. Our agency said not to drive the Saddle Road, but it's a perfectly good road, as is the road up to the observatories. discount london hotel The best we could guess, discount london hotel they just didn't want to have to go all the way out there if we really did break down. But all we saw were other rental cars all violating the restriction like us. (The same for Haleakala on Maui; the carpark up top was filled with rental cars whose drivers had agreed not to drive up there.)
Knowing what I know now, I would not pick that as a home base to work from. Basically the took a huge lava field and terra formed it into a resort area. It is not near anything except the golf course.
Pay for the van that drives you to the top of Mauna Kea at sunset. discount london hotel It was pricey but worth it. Then you don't have to drive on the saddle road, the view is fantastic and then they set up a telescope at 9000' for stargazing tha is the best view of the heavens you will ever have.
Ahalanui discount london hotel Park in Puna. Off the beaten track, it is a local park with a giant swimming pool built out of lava with a hot spring feeding one end and the ocean feeding the other. One of the top five swimming experiences I've had in my life.
One thing we really enjoyed there was a trip to the southern most tip of the island -- I believe discount london hotel it is the southern most point of the U.S. You drive through several wind farms to get there, some abandoned and unused, with broken rotors. The winds were awesome, and the ocean pounding. It is mostly lava cliffs. There were these wooden ledges built on the cliffs from which the locals could lower their boats to the water. We stood out on one of these sturdy wooden structures and felt it shudder and bend in the wind. Fishermen used large garbage bags as sails to hoist their fishing lines far out into the surf.
Volcanoes National Park is a must, of course. It was actively erupting when we were there, and part of the park was closed, but we were still able to get a good look at the ash-spewing vents. discount london hotel There were constant updates on the volcano and the weather. They were worried about the wind shifting and blowing discount london hotel ash and sulfurous discount london hotel clouds over populated areas. The hike across the cauldron there was mind-blowing.
We saw gorgeous botanical discount london hotel gardens and bird preserves. One thing that surprised us was all the mongooses. You should visit the Captain Cook monument discount london hotel at Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park. There is no road access to the monument -- you have to paddle across discount london hotel the bay to see it. Kayak rentals are available near the parking lot. Most people bring food and water because there are no services at the actual monument, and there is good snorkeling there, so people make a day of it. Mongooses wait in the bushes and when they see an opening they dart out to the shore and steal food from the tourists.
One thing to not expect is idyllic beaches. There are a few beaches, some of black sand, which is just crushed lava rock, but mostly it is jagged lava rock right down to the water. discount london hotel Bring rugged foot-wear; if you expect to slum around in flip-flops discount london hotel you won't be able to see the most impressive sights.
My husband and I live on the Big Island - written in quotes because I'm writing discount london hotel this from Indonesia, where our jobs currently are and where we have spent most of our working lives as expatriated Americans. But we chose the Big Island as our real American home many years ago, bought property discount london hotel there in 2002, and go back whenever we can. I am fiercely, fiercely in love with all that Hawaii has to offer.
Below is a small taste of my favorite places, excerpted from material I have sent to friends planning a visit (perhaps slightly out of date - this was first written in 2007, though I just tried to give it a quick update). Since our home is in Honomu, it kind of goes outward from there.
Honomu town: a line of small shops featuring local arts and crafts, jewelry, woodworking, the usual tourist stuff, etc. Ghastly prices, shuts down early, and at least a few shops will be closed at any given time.
Restaurants in Honomu: the local joints discount london hotel in town offer tasty fish sandwiches, hamburgers, pizza, shave ice and ice cream. Good bakery opens first thing in the morning. All spots close by 6 pm except pizza place which is open until 7 (it s closed all day 1-2 days a week, though.)
Old Mill beach: A marvelously atmospheric beach (not found in any guidebook, and I m not sure what, if anything, its real name is) with black sand, high surf, and the rotting out remains of an old sugar mill that was inundated in the 1946 tsunami.
Discovery Center: small but nicely done center for learning about atolls and coral reefs. You can try to manipulate objects using the mechanical hands of a submersible sub, just like the ones really used on the ocean floor.
Tsunami Museum: Excellent way to learn how various tsunamis, most notably in 1946 and 1960 but also in other years, have shaped the history of Hilo. I believe the 2004 tsunami exhibit is now up and running; don't know if they've had time to add much about the 2011 Japanese event.
discount london hotel Boiling Pots: A scenic spot on the Wailuku River with a nice, abbreviated but steep hike (it takes all of about 5 minutes) you can take down to the water. You don t have to take the hike to enjoy the scenery.
Hilo waterfront shops: Hilo fancies itself as something of an artists colony and a lot of the locally produced glasswork, painting, woodcraft, etc. is available in the shops here. You be the judge of its quality. T-shirts, surf gear, fabulous but pricy Japanese cloth, and other miscellaneous discount london hotel items are available as well.
Onekahakaha Beach: I love this little beach, and based on how popular it is a lot of locals do too, but truth in advertising requires me to add that (a) it is extremely shallow better for splashing discount london hotel around than for actual swimming; (b) it s rocky and there is algae/seaweed so you need tabbies and you can t be the kind of person who flips out at the sight of green goo from the ocean. The cool thing about this beach is that gigantic breakers shield discount london hotel the inland swimming areas from enormous, threatening waves that foam impressively right behind where little children frolic in calm waters.
Big Island Candies: You can see the factory through discount london hotel large glass windows behind the store, and occasionally you ll see a row of diligent little old Asian ladies hand-dipping chocolates. But the real point is to buy tasty candies and cookies made with local ingredients like mac nuts and kona coffee.
Hilo Zoo: More of a park with birds, monkeys and reptiles than a full-fledged zoo, this is a lovely spot for a stroll and a picnic. On Saturdays there are sometimes activities such as a petting zoo for children. The zoo s pride (no pun intended) is a gorgeous white tiger named Namaste. No admission charge.
Kaumana Caves: discount london hotel Although you can simply stare at the entrances to this lava tube and leave, it s much more fun if you venture inside and take a 20-minute, rather challenging hike over jagged lava boulders in the dark.
Lili uokalani Gardens and Banyan Drive: An attractive Japanese garden to stroll through, and you ll never guess what sort of trees grace Banyan Drive. Not all that exciting, but perfect for drive-through tourism.
