We arrived in Auckland after a long, long trip from Los Angeles! We were way too tired to do much of anything. So after we picked up our rental car from Rental Car New Zealand's Auckland airport outlet, we drove straight to the hotel and fell asleep. Pretty anticlimactic!
We were still a little groggy from jet lag, but we forced ourselves out of bed in order to explore downtown how do you join the nationwide tour Auckland. What a cool city! Of course, it was too early in the trip to do any souvenir shopping, so we mostly just looked through shop windows and walked around. We had a great dinner at Zest restaurant, with some New Zealand wine to wash it down. Nat a bad way to start to the trip!
Our first big adventure was to the Waitomo Caves. This is an awesome, underground cave system full of little, sparkling glowworms. There are a few tours available, how do you join the nationwide tour and we decided to try the Black Labyrinth Tour, which lasts about three hours and includes tubing through the caves. It was definitely a thrill and really how do you join the nationwide tour cool to see the glowworms on the cave roof. They looked just like stars, but with a little twinge of green. It was pretty surreal.
To get to Rotorua from Waitomo, we had to do a little bit of backtracking how do you join the nationwide tour north. The drive still didn't take long though—just two and a half hours. It seems like everything in New Zealand how do you join the nationwide tour is close together! how do you join the nationwide tour This is sort of a shock coming from the US where you could drive for days before hitting your destination. It was nice to have such short driving times though, since we were still getting used to the idea of driving on the left side of the road.
After lunch, the boys wanted to try 'zorbing'—an activity invented in Rotorua that basically puts you inside a hamster how do you join the nationwide tour ball and sends you rolling at top speed down a hill. I was looking for something a little more laid back, so we split up and decided to meet back up for dinner.
Off to the Art Deco capital of New Zealand! In 1931, the town was devastated by a major earthquake and many of the downtown buildings were rebuilt in an Art Deco style. how do you join the nationwide tour The whole effect makes you feel a little bit like you stepped back in time (and also makes for great photos!). We spent most of the day walking around how do you join the nationwide tour the town and checking how do you join the nationwide tour out the architecture.
We were definitely getting used to driving in New Zealand—Chuck drove the 4 and a half hours from Napier to Wellington without once turning on the windshield wipers instead of the turn signal (the switches are flipped in American cars).
Once we got to Wellington, we explored the downtown, which is divided into four distinct sections: Cuba Street, how do you join the nationwide tour Courtenay Place, Lambton Quay and Willis Street. What's really interesting is how distinct how do you join the nationwide tour all of these areas were! Cuba Street how do you join the nationwide tour has a really bohemian feel, Lambton Quay and Willis Street are quite business-oriented and Courtenay how do you join the nationwide tour Place is super trendy. We had a blast shopping and people-watching.
We spent all day in Wellington, visiting all the touristy spots: Te Papa (the national museum), the zoo, the Botanic Gardens, the Mount Victoria Lookout… It was amazing how much there was to do! We didn't even notice how late it was until we started getting hungry for dinner.
We went to dinner at a Thai restaurant in Courtenay Place and then out for drinks afterwards. It was a lot of fun, and we probably would have stayed out until the sun came up if we didn't have an early morning ferry to catch.
