Lot's of people fly into either Las Vegas or Salt Lake City... Phoenix is probably best if your only plan is to visit the south rim of the GC... but there is so much else to see. Any other sightseeing plans?
We've used Las Vegas to fly in to several times for the south rim. Both airfare and car rentals were much less expensive and there are lots of other things to do from there. Sometimes we stop at Hoover Dam and spend the night along the way closeto I 40.
Another option is to fly into Flagstaff, which is approx 90 minutes south of the GC. The only carrier is US Airways but if you fly them from your point of origin, the extra cost is minimal for the flight from Phoenix (PHX) to Flagstaff (FLG). If you fly into PHX, your drive to the GC will be about 4+ hours. The plane to FLG is a 37-seater, in case that makes a difference.
Thank you to all. I have discovered that Sedona isn't too far from Sho Low were my dear aunt lives. We will plan a trip over to see her, and thanks to MichelleY and Happytrailstoyou, may rethink our Grand Canyon trip.
